The horror title Outlast has established itself as a prominent series within the genre, reaching a milestone of 60 million players. Developed by the Montreal-based studio Red Barrels, the game originated from a small team of 10 people.

Founders Phillipe Morin, David Chateauneuf, and Hugo Dallaire established the studio after departing from major companies including Naughty Dog, Ubisoft, and Electronic Arts. The team sought to create an independent project following the cancellation of a previous endeavor at EA.

The developers focused on a first-person horror experience where players are defenseless. Instead of engaging in combat, users must rely on running and hiding from enemies to survive the game's threats.

A defining visual mechanic of the title is its signature night-vision lens. This stylistic choice, conceived by Hugo Dallaire, serves to heighten the atmosphere of terror throughout the gameplay experience.
