Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells, has expanded into a multi-game developer and creator of the Triple-i Initiative. This recurring indie showcase was established to help developers navigate the increasingly crowded Steam marketplace by connecting them with specific, targeted audiences rather than chasing broad view counts.
The studio’s recent Triple-i event in October faced challenges regarding Steam visibility, as Valve limits event featuring to once per year. Despite this, the showcase highlighted significant titles like Machinarium 2 and The Talos Principle 3, aiming to maintain an impactful platform for indie studios to reach potential buyers.
Regarding development practices, CEO Thomas Pfeiffer and Head of Business Ben Laulan noted that while early access was vital for past projects, the landscape has shifted. Laulan observed that player expectations for quality have risen significantly, citing Hades as a major influence. Consequently, the team is exploring new methods to gather community feedback without relying solely on traditional early access models.
Finally, the studio maintains a firm stance against using generative AI in its production. Pfeiffer emphasized that game development is a collaborative human effort, and replacing this creative struggle with machine assistance would fundamentally alter the meaning of their work, even if it could potentially increase speed or efficiency.
