Reddit user DallasGrave has introduced a custom quad 8-pin power conversion kit designed to mitigate the risk of power-related meltdowns on the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090. This hardware solution aims to address concerns surrounding the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector and its 12V-2x6 revision, which have been associated with thermal failures.

The kit functions as a direct-mount solution that solders to the graphics card’s PCB power rails. By bypassing the 16-pin connection, it redistributes the 600W power draw across four standard 8-pin PCIe connectors. This design utilizes 12 power pins rather than six, effectively halving the current per pin to approximately 4.17A compared to the 8.33A required by the 16-pin standard.

While the 16-pin connector operates near its safety limits, the modder claims the new configuration significantly lowers wire and terminal temperatures. The kit also tricks the sense pins to recognize the full 600W capacity, with the creator reporting successful tests up to 800W when combined with a shunt mod.

DallasGrave is currently developing a custom backplate and plans to produce versions compatible with various GPU models, including Nvidia’s Founders Edition. However, the developer has not yet disclosed official pricing, installation logistics, or a specific release date for these components.
