Apocalypse Studios, led by Legacy of Kain creator Denis Dyack, has released the Dark Rebirth update for the early access action RPG Deadhaus Sonata. This free update aims to address previous criticisms regarding the game's combat and visual quality, as the studio attempts to revitalize the project and fulfill its potential as a dark fantasy successor.

The update migrates the title to Unreal Engine 5.7, facilitating a complete overhaul of lighting and atmospheric effects. Under the guidance of new creative director Ethan McKinnon, the project features a revised artistic design. Furthermore, the primary exploration area, The Vale, has been expanded to five times its original size, now incorporating verticality and additional secrets.

Combat mechanics have been significantly refined, introducing an improved dismemberment system, more execution animations, and distinct handling for axes, swords, and spears. Additionally, a new physical deterioration system tracks damage across five stages, which are influenced by the player's equipped armor. The update also adds five new Tarot cards to the progression system.

Performance optimizations have been implemented to support Steam Deck compatibility. The update is available at no extra cost to existing early access owners. For new players, the game is currently discounted to 14,62 euros on Steam until October 26.
