The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) organization has implemented new criteria for age ratings, focusing on monetization systems. This policy, which began in March, now extends to both upcoming releases and existing digital titles, potentially increasing their age classifications.
Connor Hinde, an administrator at the Games Rating Authority, confirmed that this update applies to digital games rated by PEGI or the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC). The rollout of these reclassifications began in October and will continue progressively.
Digital games currently rated PEGI 3, 7, or 12 that feature paid random elements, such as loot boxes, will be automatically updated to a PEGI 16 rating. These titles will also receive specific labels identifying the presence of these monetization systems.
This change significantly impacts popular franchises. For instance, EA Sports FC will shift from PEGI 3 to PEGI 16, while gacha-style games from developers like HoYoverse will move from PEGI 12 to PEGI 16. These measures aim to provide transparency for parents and users regarding gambling-like mechanics.
