Wizards of the Coast is set to release Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, a new Universes Beyond expansion. Principal game designer James Wyatt describes the project as a "toolbox" that allows players to experience Azeroth through the lens of tabletop roleplaying rather than a direct translation of the MMO's complex mechanics.

The expansion focuses on paraphrasing iconic classes and dungeons to evoke the flavor of World of Warcraft. Wyatt notes that while WoW talents are granular, D&D mechanics prioritize flexibility. For instance, Paladins in the tabletop game are not strictly limited to tanking or healing roles, and Priests can wear armor beyond cloth, offering players broader character options.

Regarding combat, Wyatt explains that dungeons are designed with a "light touch," providing maps and boss markers while leaving room for Dungeon Master improvisation. This approach contrasts with the MMO, as players can interact with environments and NPCs in ways not possible in the digital game. Bosses like the Lich King are assigned high challenge ratings to reflect their difficulty.

The expansion includes an optional renown system to represent faction loyalty, which can be scaled based on campaign needs. Additionally, the book utilizes Chromie to provide narrative justification for ignoring canon or exploring different timelines. While the current release does not cover all recent WoW content, Wyatt expressed interest in future collaborations with Blizzard.
