Wizards of the Coast is set to release the Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft expansion, a new Universes Beyond project. Principal game designer James Wyatt describes the book as a "toolbox" that allows players to experience Azeroth through the lens of tabletop roleplaying rather than strictly replicating the MMO's combat-heavy mechanics.

The expansion adapts iconic classes and species, focusing on evoking their thematic flavor rather than translating granular MMO math. Wyatt notes that while WoW classes are often narrowly defined by roles like tank or healer, the D&D adaptation offers broader options. Players can customize their characters using new feats and spells, with the system designed to encourage player imagination over rigid button-pressing.

Regarding dungeons, Wyatt explains that selections were based on thematic conflicts and popularity. While the book includes specific dungeon maps and boss encounters, the gameplay remains flexible. Dungeon Masters are encouraged to improvise between encounters, allowing for exploration and social interaction that differs from the programmed experience of the MMO.

The expansion includes an Icecrown Citadel adventure via a digital download code and map pack. Additionally, an optional reputation system allows players to gain renown with factions, though Wyatt emphasizes this is not essential for play. The book also utilizes "Chromie Time" as a narrative device to grant players permission to ignore canon and explore various timelines.
