The decomp.dev community, which tracks game decompilation progress, is closing its public index and leaderboard. Creator @encounter stated that the rise of AI has damaged the community, turning the platform into a hollow numbers game where users prioritize increasing percentages over quality.
Matching decompilation involves creating hand-written source code that compiles to the original machine code. While tools like objdiff and decomp-toolkit were designed to support this research, recent AI models like GPT-6 Astra have accelerated the process significantly, allowing users to generate code that matches machine output without reflecting the original developers' standards.
@encounter noted that the site's open nature has been exploited by bad actors who use AI to quickly finish projects or create rough PC ports. Because defining and moderating AI-generated slop is impractical, the creator decided that maintaining the leaderboard is no longer sustainable.
While existing projects like Super Smash Bros. Melee will retain their pages, no new projects will be added to the index. The site will not be rebuilt, and no successor has been named, effectively ending the platform's role as a centralized hub for tracking decompilation progress.
