Funcom has initiated a company-wide restructuring process that includes staff layoffs. As part of this transition, current CEO Rui Casais is set to depart the organization once the reorganization concludes, with Chief Product Officer Scott Junior slated to succeed him.
The studio is shifting its operational focus entirely toward supporting existing survival RPGs, specifically Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles. According to Casais, the transition from full production to long-term post-launch operations necessitates a different organizational structure that cannot sustain the headcount required during peak development.
Dune: Awakening, which launched in June last year, previously underwent significant changes to address community feedback. Following a decline in player counts and mixed reactions to its PvP-focused endgame, the studio introduced solo play and PvE-exclusive modes. Meanwhile, Conan Exiles received a new engine and a major paid expansion this year.
Funcom has not disclosed the specific number of employees impacted by these layoffs. Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos indicated that the studio is currently not prepared to begin development on new titles, noting that any future project plans remain only vague ideas.
