Shawn Layden, former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, recently shared an anecdote regarding the competitive tension between Sony and Nintendo. During an interview on The Expansion Pass YouTube channel, Layden recounted that a friend working at Nintendo sent him a blunt message, "¡Cabrones!", immediately after Sony unveiled the PSP.
At the time of the PSP announcement, Nintendo held a dominant position in the handheld market with the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance. Sony's entry was viewed as a serious threat because the PSP aimed to provide a technical and audiovisual experience comparable to home consoles.
Despite the PSP's success, reaching over 76 million units sold, it was ultimately outsold by the Nintendo DS, which moved more than 154 million units globally. Layden noted that the PSP faced significant challenges, including widespread piracy following system modifications, though titles like Monster Hunter helped drive sales through cooperative multiplayer.
Reflecting on the potential for a future Sony handheld, Layden suggested that the company historically struggled to market two platforms simultaneously. He argued that any future portable device would require a dedicated team and a separate marketing budget to succeed.
