The second Overwatch "If the Crisis Never Happened" skin design contest in China has encountered significant controversy following the announcement of its winners on the 16th. The competition, which offers a top prize of 20,000 RMB and the potential for winning designs to be implemented into the game, has seen three of its top five entries face serious accusations.
One third-place entry, the "Animal Maid Cafe" series, was disqualified by official organizers after complaints revealed the use of AI, which violated the competition's rules. Another third-place design, "Ana Silver Gift," sparked debate regarding the requirement that entries be original to this specific contest, as it was identified as a reworked version of a piece created for a fan cafe event in May.
Furthermore, a second-place entry titled "Funeral Love D.Va" has been accused of plagiarism. Creator @Karulox claimed on X that the design was stolen from their own 2015 concept art. While Chinese players have reportedly submitted reports to the organizers, the publisher NetEase has yet to provide an official response regarding this specific allegation.
These incidents have created a difficult situation for the local operator, as the top three winning entries are intended for potential inclusion in the game for global players. With three out of five top awards currently under scrutiny, the integrity of the selection process remains a point of contention.
