Key information
CD Projekt Red has officially addressed the upcoming live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated that the company does not intend to produce a direct cinematic adaptation of the game, opting instead to tell a new story set within the established universe.
The production is currently being developed in partnership with Paramount, now operating under the Skydance banner following a recent merger. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, recognized for his work on the Transformers film series, is attached to produce the project.
This creative direction mirrors the strategy used for the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. While that project remained faithful to the world and setting of the game, it focused on original characters and a unique narrative arc rather than retelling the game's specific plot.
The Cyberpunk universe, originally conceived by tabletop RPG designer Mike Pondsmith, provides a broad foundation for exploring complex themes like autonomy and identity. This approach allows the studio to expand the franchise beyond the constraints of existing game narratives.
