The StarCraft II community and professional players have largely rejected the official 5.0.16 update, commonly referred to as the 8-worker patch. This update, deployed this summer, reduced the starting worker count and significantly altered the game's foundations, leading to widespread disapproval and a decline in official game engagement.
In response, players migrated to PatchesMod, an unofficial modification created by a developer known as Patches. This mod preserves the game's historical early-game mechanics, allowing professionals like ByuN to utilize established build orders. Conversely, the mod introduces mid and late-game improvements, such as increased range and survivability for Protoss Stalkers.
The shift to the mod was significant enough that several professional tournaments transitioned away from the base game to compete on the modded version. A separate ladder was established on Vespene.gg, featuring cash prizes for top competitors. The mod's creator is noted for frequent updates and transparent communication regarding balance changes.
Blizzard has since reverted the 8-worker patch, restoring original settings and acknowledging the error. While this reversal was welcomed, player trust remains impacted. The event marks an unprecedented moment in esports where the professional elite abandoned the official client for a community-driven alternative, highlighting the resilience of the StarCraft II scene.
