Seven years after the 2019 launch of Apple Arcade, Apple remains committed to its gaming strategy. Carson Oliver, the new head of App Store Worldwide, recently spearheaded Indie Games Week to highlight independent titles on iOS, signaling a focus on positioning the App Store as a primary destination for premium indie games.
Apple is leveraging advanced hardware and software to attract developers. Oliver highlighted technologies like hardware-accelerated ray tracing, the A20 Pro chip, and Game Porting Toolkit 4. Hello Games founder Sean Murray noted that these advancements enabled a port of No Man’s Sky to run on an iPhone 11, utilizing only 5GB of storage.
To improve discoverability, Apple employs human curation and new features like Creative Assets, which allow developers to showcase custom artwork in search results. While Apple remains guarded with internal data, Oliver noted growth in premium game releases. However, questions persist regarding the future of Apple Arcade and the company's mixed reality gaming efforts following reports of reduced Vision Pro production.
Ultimately, Apple aims to provide flexible business models for developers, allowing games to exist as premium downloads or within the Apple Arcade subscription. As console hardware costs rise, Apple hopes to capitalize on a generation of players who view the iPhone and iPad as their primary gaming devices.
