Square Enix frequently reissues mainline Final Fantasy entries, yet the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy remains notably absent from modern remaster efforts. Despite the series' history of remakes, the original title and its two sequels have not received updated versions, leaving them largely confined to seventh-generation hardware.
The trilogy is currently accessible on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC via Steam. However, the original game is nearly 18 years old, and the series is entirely unavailable on platforms like the Nintendo Switch 2. This lack of availability is striking given the trilogy's former status as the face of the franchise.
Critics highlight the game's gorgeous art style, detailed environments, and Masashi Hamauzu's soundtrack as major strengths. The combat system is described as complex yet accessible, with the sequels further refining these mechanics. Conversely, the game is criticized for its slow pacing, excessive tutorialization, and restrictive, tunnel-like level design that only opens up upon reaching Gran Pulse.
While the narrative and characters have faced mixed reception compared to other entries, an HD remaster could potentially address these design flaws. Proponents argue that despite these shortcomings, the trilogy remains a significant part of the series' history that deserves to be preserved and updated for contemporary audiences.
