Ken Kutaragi, widely recognized as the father of the PlayStation, has publicly backed Sony's strategic shift away from physical media. In an interview with Video Games Chronicle, the former executive stated that continuing to manufacture game discs is no longer economically viable for the company.

Kutaragi highlighted the evolution of connectivity since the PlayStation 2 and 3 eras. He noted that while network features existed previously, they were not utilized as extensively as they are today, making the current digital-first landscape a natural progression for the platform.

Sony confirmed that it will cease physical disc production for new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028. While existing physical titles will remain unaffected, all future games launched after this date will be distributed exclusively in digital formats.

Kutaragi acknowledged that many players view physical discs as a symbol of ownership and expressed understanding regarding their frustration. However, some users have voiced concerns on social media regarding long-term game preservation and the potential loss of access to digital purchases.
