Following the closure of BioWare by EA, the anticipated next entry in the Mass Effect series will no longer be developed. This project, colloquially referred to as Mass Effect 5, had been in development since its 2020 announcement, though BioWare provided few concrete details regarding its scope or official title.
Despite the lack of specific gameplay information, limited teasers offered glimpses into the project's potential direction. Concept art released late last year depicted a Krogan civil war, while earlier promotional material featured an older character resembling Liara exploring snowy ruins near the remnants of the Citadel.
The author notes that while the project's cancellation is disappointing, the series' future was already subject to speculation following the mixed reception of Mass Effect Andromeda and the shift in style seen in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The uncertainty surrounding the game's quality remains a primary source of frustration for fans.
While other titles like Exodus, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, and Casey Hudson’s Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic are currently in development, the author suggests these alternatives cannot replicate the specific experience of the original trilogy. These upcoming games are currently expected to arrive as early as next year or by 2029.
