At New York Comic Con, Wizards of the Coast unveiled Marvel Darkhold Destiny, the latest expansion in the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond series. This set focuses on the mystical aspects of the Marvel universe, following previous releases featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spider-Man, and Marvel Super Heroes.
Lead designer Mark Rosewater explained that the team intentionally waited until the third Marvel set to release this expansion. According to Rosewater, initial Marvel sets required delivering recognizable characters from the films to meet audience expectations. This later release provided the creative freedom to explore deeper, more thematic content.
Narrative designer Dillon Deveney noted that the set aims to balance appeal for long-time Magic players with the interests of newer fans introduced through earlier Marvel collaborations. The design team intends to avoid alienating Marvel enthusiasts while still providing a rewarding experience for established Magic players.
The development team, including art director Merideth Mulroney and Marvel director of product development Jesse Falcon, confirmed the set will introduce a brand-new character appearing in both the cards and comics. Additionally, the expansion features a returning mechanic that has not appeared in the game for several decades.
