Psychic Software has officially announced The Lich Wars, a standalone prequel to their previous RPG, The Necromancer's Tale. This new title expands upon the choose-your-own-adventure prologue of the original game, transforming those narrative foundations into a full-length experience.
The game is described as a partially voiced, branching storybook RPG. Players assume the role of a musketeer in an alternate 1700s setting, navigating a 30-year career that spans multiple conflicts. The gameplay incorporates traditional RPG elements such as skills, statistics, and evolving character relationships, while maintaining the risk of permanent character death.
The developer notes that the narrative explores gothic themes, including the ethics of war and the tension between emerging science and traditional superstition. While the game retains some 3D map and tabletop elements, the presentation shifts focus toward hand-drawn illustrations and text-heavy storytelling. This design choice is viewed as an improvement over the previous title, as it removes the 3D town navigation that the reviewer found cumbersome.
Players will traverse the alternate-history kingdom of Rulsthen and various locations across Western Europe. Although a Steam page is currently available for those interested in further details, the developer has not yet provided a specific release date for the project.
