Ken Kutaragi, the creator of the first three PlayStation consoles, has stated that maintaining physical game discs is no longer economically reasonable. Speaking at the Game Republic New Horizons event in the United Kingdom, the former Sony Interactive Entertainment president addressed the industry's shift toward a fully digital market.
Kutaragi acknowledges that physical media has become a metaphor for ownership, a sentiment he understands causes friction among players. However, he compares the situation to mobile phones, where users do not require physical supports to access content. He suggests the transition is primarily a matter of changing consumer mentality.
The former executive noted that widespread internet connectivity has fundamentally altered market needs since the days of the PS2 and PS3. He believes current Sony leadership may be moving away from traditional console concepts to prioritize a connected platform, a vision that does not always align with the expectations of traditional fans.
Kutaragi, who left Sony in 2007, has long anticipated this evolution, having discussed a future of digital distribution and streaming as early as 2006. He further suggested that cloud computing and artificial intelligence could eventually render consoles unnecessary. He emphasized that these views are personal and do not represent Sony's official stance.
