Ken Kutaragi, recognized as the creator of the PlayStation, recently acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the industry's shift away from physical game discs. During an event held in the United Kingdom, the former Sony executive explained that manufacturing physical media is no longer financially viable for the company.

Kutaragi compared the transition to the digital-first model of smartphones, noting that users do not demand physical copies for mobile games because they trust their content remains accessible. He suggested that while discs represent a sense of ownership, their disappearance is primarily driven by economic factors and evolving consumer habits.

The executive highlighted that current PlayStation leadership possesses significant experience in streaming services. This expertise aligns with a strategic goal to evolve the console into a device that functions as a platform for content permanently connected to the internet.

Regarding future industry trends, Kutaragi expressed concern over rising hardware costs, noting that modern PCs can reach the price of a car. He proposed that advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing could eventually eliminate the necessity for dedicated gaming consoles entirely.
