The console industry faces a significant downturn as hardware sales plummet. Circana reports that Xbox unit sales dropped 33% through August, while PlayStation sales fell 25%, marking a 13-year low. High costs are the primary driver, with the average PlayStation price reaching $597 compared to the $399 launch price in 2020. Analysts do not expect market stabilization until 2028.
High-end PC hardware is similarly affected by extreme pricing. Reports suggest the RTX 5090 may be discontinued, with chips diverted to workstation cards. Retail prices for these GPUs have soared well above the $1,999 launch MSRP, often exceeding $5,000, effectively pricing out many consumers.
This hardware freeze may force a shift toward devices consumers already own, such as smartphones and Mac laptops. While Sony currently benefits from the PS5's established install base, a prolonged market freeze risks permanent changes to consumer habits. As players adapt to mobile or existing laptop hardware, the industry may move away from traditional console-centric models.
Emerging technologies like the NotProton project could facilitate Mac gaming by enabling Windows titles to run via Steam. If such tools become official, they might bypass the need for direct developer ports, further challenging the dominance of dedicated gaming consoles in a constrained market.
