Key information
Professional fighting game competitor SonicFox has officially canceled their appearance at the upcoming Nexcon event in Norman, Oklahoma. The decision follows the discovery of a promotional poster that utilized generative AI to replicate the player's mascot character.
The controversy emerged on October 20 when a fan highlighted the AI-generated imagery on social media. The poster featured the likenesses of several special guests, including SonicFox, in a distinct AI art style. SonicFox publicly condemned the move, labeling the unauthorized use of their likeness as disrespectful and stating their interest in attending had dropped to zero.
The player emphasized that much of their branding relies on artwork commissioned from the furry community. Critics within the fighting game scene argued that feeding such original work into generative models without consent effectively misappropriates the labor of independent artists to train future systems.
Following the announcement of the contract termination, Nexcon removed all references to SonicFox from its official website. While the event was originally scheduled for November 14 - 15, the player will no longer participate in the proceedings.
