Key information
Fuse Games has achieved a Metacritic score of 88 for the PS5 version of Star Wars: Galactic Racer. CEO Matt Webster notes that while it is too early to determine if sales expectations have been met, the studio is pleased with the audience's reception to the game's roguelike structure, which emphasizes learning from failure.
Breaking from traditional AAA development, Fuse Games maintained a core team of 75 people, often smaller, by utilizing a distributed development model. This strategy involves three tiers: traditional outsourcing for assets, external development for self-contained features like photo mode, and co-development for integrated partners who work directly within the studio's internal channels.
Webster emphasizes that this model requires strategic configuration from the start, as managing multiple partners increases the management load. He cautions that studios cannot simply adopt this approach without preparation, noting that co-development partners were chosen based on shared values and proximity to ensure effective communication.
Inspired by the Netflix series Drive to Survive, the game incorporates a paddock area to provide narrative depth and pacing relief from high-intensity racing. Currently, the studio is focused on post-launch support, having released four patches to address player feedback. The game is also available on Amazon Luna.
