Marvelous Entertainment recently unveiled Eternal Anima, a retro-styled role-playing game set in the oppressive world of Urvis Ael. Players control Wade, an amnesiac soldier branded a heretic for his Psychometry abilities. To uncover the truth, Wade joins a group of freedom fighters aboard a massive ship, traveling across continents to alter the past and reshape the future.

The game introduces two core mechanics: Inherit Wisdom and Future Sight. Inherit Wisdom allows Wade to absorb classes and abilities from ancient artifacts, enabling customized play styles. Future Sight provides a tactical advantage in turn-based combat by displaying enemy actions on a timeline. Players can use a Knock Back feature to delay or even remove enemy turns entirely by strategically timing their attacks.

Polygon’s reviewer praised the battle system for forcing a strategic shift in traditional RPG combat, noting that the timeline mechanics make predicting and mitigating damage much more intuitive. The reviewer also highlighted the eclectic, fully voiced supporting cast, including the automaton MOS and warrior Neria, as a major strength that adds significant personality to the experience.

Developed by a team featuring veterans from Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, the title aims to honor classic JRPG traditions while innovating through its time-manipulation systems. Eternal Anima is scheduled for release on March 4, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
