Following the closure of BioWare by EA, the anticipated next entry in the Mass Effect series will no longer be released. The project, which fans informally referred to as Mass Effect 5, had been in development since its initial announcement in 2020.

While official details remained scarce, promotional materials provided glimpses into the game's potential direction. Concept art released late last year depicted a Krogan civil war featuring a grizzled leader and a squad. Additionally, a teaser trailer showcased an older Asari, appearing to be Liara, navigating snowy ruins near the remnants of the Citadel.

The author notes that the project's cancellation prevents any confirmation of whether the title would have successfully returned the franchise to its original form. Concerns regarding the game's potential quality were previously raised by the author due to the studio's recent output, including Anthem and the shift toward action-oriented gameplay in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Despite the cancellation, other titles with similar thematic or creative ties remain in development. These include Exodus, which features Mass Effect alumni, and The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, both of which are currently tracking for release next year. Additionally, former director Casey Hudson’s studio is developing Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, expected by 2029.
