Ken Kutaragi, often called the Father of PlayStation, has addressed the controversy surrounding Sony's decision to terminate support for PS5 game discs by 2028. While acknowledging that many users feel they own their physical purchases, Kutaragi noted that users do not typically feel the same necessity for physical media on networked devices like smartphones.
Kutaragi suggested that maintaining physical media support is no longer economically reasonable for the company. Although Sony still sells millions of physical units annually, with some regions seeing over 50% of new PS5 game sales coming from physical copies, the industry trend is shifting heavily toward digital consumption.
Sony characterizes the move as a natural progression in response to consumer behavior. Kutaragi observed that the company's evolving workforce, which includes individuals from streaming services like Gaikai, may view the console primarily as a content terminal rather than a traditional gaming machine. This perspective has reportedly created friction with dedicated gaming enthusiasts.
While Sony prepares to phase out discs, the broader industry remains divided. Nintendo has indicated it does not currently plan to abandon physical media, whereas Microsoft's future strategy regarding discs remains unconfirmed, though many observers anticipate a similar transition toward digital-only platforms.
