Ken Kutaragi, widely recognized as the Father of PlayStation, has publicly supported Sony's decision to move away from physical discs. Speaking to VGC, Kutaragi acknowledged the consumer backlash but argued that maintaining physical media is not economically reasonable in the current era of widespread network connectivity.

Kutaragi compared the transition to the evolution of smartphones, suggesting that the attachment to physical discs is primarily a mentality issue regarding ownership. He noted that as users become accustomed to digital content, the necessity for physical formats diminishes, mirroring broader shifts in the entertainment industry.

Sony has confirmed that physical game disc production for all new PlayStation titles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Sid Shuman, Senior Director at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that this move aligns with shifting consumer preferences toward digital formats, though it will not impact games released prior to that date.

Looking toward the future, Kutaragi speculated that consoles themselves could eventually be phased out in favor of streaming solutions to mitigate rising hardware costs. He clarified that these remarks regarding the potential end of consoles do not constitute an official statement from Sony Computer Entertainment.
