Ken Kutaragi, widely recognized as the "Father of PlayStation," has publicly supported Sony's decision to move away from physical media. Speaking to VGC, Kutaragi acknowledged the consumer backlash regarding the loss of discs but argued that maintaining physical formats is not economically reasonable in the current era of widespread network connectivity.

Kutaragi characterized the attachment to physical discs as a "mentality issue," comparing the situation to smartphones where users do not feel the need for physical media to retain content. He suggested that Sony's broader strategy may involve streaming solutions, potentially leading to a future where dedicated gaming consoles are no longer required to combat rising hardware component costs.

Sony has confirmed that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will cease entirely by January 2028. Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications, stated that this transition aligns with shifting consumer preferences toward digital formats. The company noted that this change will not affect games released prior to the 2028 deadline.

Despite the official shift, the decision has faced resistance from the gaming community. Players have utilized various channels, including official PlayStation surveys, to express concerns regarding game preservation as the industry moves toward a digital-only model.
