The PlayStation 5 jailbreak community has successfully developed a method to play original PlayStation 2 game discs on the console. This development, which involves unauthorized modifications to the system, allows users to bypass official limitations to access legacy software.
The PS5SX2 emulator, a native port of the PC-based PCSX2, facilitates this functionality. According to Tom’s Hardware, the emulator supports discs from all regions, provided they are in DVD format. However, CD-based games remain unsupported due to inherent hardware constraints, though the system works with both internal and USB-connected disc drives.
Beyond basic playback, the emulator introduces several visual enhancements. Users can upscale classic titles to 4K resolution and utilize FidelityFX Super Resolution. Furthermore, modification files allow for widescreen support and 60fps gameplay, alongside various audio and visual adjustment settings.
Looking ahead, the developers behind this project have indicated that support for original PlayStation 3 discs is currently in development. They anticipate that playing PS3 titles on jailbroken PS5 consoles will be possible in the near future.
