Square Enix has officially announced the SQUARE ENIX GAME CONTEST 2026, a competition featuring a total prize pool of 1 billion yen. Executive officer Yosuke Saito explained that the initiative aims to help developers gain visibility in a crowded market, drawing inspiration from the company's 1982 contest that helped launch the careers of industry figures like Yuji Horii and Koichi Nakamura.

The contest encourages entries that focus on a single, well-refined concept rather than large-scale productions. Saito noted that games like 'Astrooka' or 'Voice of Cards' serve as examples of the desired creative direction. Furthermore, the contest allows the use of AI as a development support tool, provided it adheres to established guidelines.

To ensure the selection process reflects current player preferences, the company will involve general game fans as judges alongside internal staff. The first round of judging will be based on gameplay videos, emphasizing the importance of titles that are engaging to watch. Additionally, the company intends to provide feedback to finalists, aiming to support their future growth even if they do not win.

Applications for the contest open on December 15, 2026, and close on March 15, 2027. Winners will receive comprehensive support, including potential opportunities for publishing, marketing, and media adaptations such as comics or novels, leveraging Square Enix's unique position as both a game developer and publisher.
