Matt Webster, head of developer Fuse Games, revealed that the Netflix series Drive to Survive served as a primary inspiration for Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Webster noted that the show's focus on off-track rivalries and interpersonal drama provided a compelling template for the game's narrative approach.
To replicate this dynamic, the game incorporates paddock sequences where players interact with various Star Wars characters. Webster emphasized that these moments are essential for immersion and pacing, providing a lower-intensity environment to balance the high-speed racing segments.
The title launched on October 6 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Amazon Luna. Critics have responded positively to the release, with the PlayStation 5 version currently holding an 88 score on Metacritic.
Webster previously identified a market gap for the project, noting it is the first Star Wars racing title since 2002. He suggested that as gaming audiences expand, even niche genres can find significant success.
