Professional fighting game competitor SonicFox has officially canceled their appearance at the upcoming Nexcon convention in Norman, Oklahoma. The decision follows the discovery that event organizers utilized generative AI to create a promotional poster featuring the player's mascot character.
The controversy emerged on October 20, 2026, when a fan highlighted the AI-generated imagery on social media. The poster depicted the likenesses of SonicFox and other invited guests in a distinct AI art style, prompting immediate backlash regarding the unauthorized use of creative work.
SonicFox publicly condemned the action as disrespectful, noting that the mascot artwork is typically produced by members of the furry community. The player emphasized that feeding such art into generative models without consent effectively misappropriates the work of original creators.
Following the announcement of the contract termination, Nexcon removed all references to SonicFox from its official website. The event, originally scheduled for November 14 - 15, has faced criticism from the fighting game community for using AI tools to promote a gathering intended to support artists and creators.
