BioWare, a studio founded by doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, has concluded its 31-year history. Following an acquisition by a private investment group earlier this year, the studio has been shut down, with a previously announced fifth Mass Effect game also canceled.

The developer gained prominence in the late 90s with Baldur’s Gate, which reset expectations for CRPGs. Their portfolio expanded to include Neverwinter Nights and the Star Wars title Knights of the Old Republic, the latter of which is praised for its narrative choices and turn-based combat. Later, the studio shifted toward third-person action with the Mass Effect trilogy, which allowed players to import save files and carry choices across three games.

Reviewers have highlighted the studio's range, noting that Jade Empire received a 9.9 out of 10 from IGN in 2005. While Mass Effect 3 is remembered for a controversial ending that required a post-launch patch, the author notes the game featured world-class combat. Conversely, the studio faced challenges with titles like Mass Effect Andromeda and the unsuccessful live-service project Anthem.

Despite recent results not matching its past, the studio is credited with a significant legacy. The author asserts that BioWare remains the greatest RPG developer over a long period, citing the depth of its storytelling and the success of its bold experiments like the Mass Effect trilogy.
