Key information
CD Projekt Red has officially addressed the development of a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated that the company intends to avoid a direct adaptation of the existing game, opting instead to craft an entirely new story set within the established Cyberpunk universe.
The production is moving forward in collaboration with Paramount, currently operating under the Skydance banner. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the Transformers franchise, has been tapped to produce the project.
This creative direction mirrors the strategy employed for the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. While that project maintained thematic and setting consistency with the game world, it focused on an original cast of characters rather than retelling the specific journey of the mercenary V.
The expansive Cyberpunk universe, originally conceived by tabletop designer Mike Pondsmith, provides significant flexibility for these new narratives. By moving away from the game's specific plot, the studio aims to explore the setting's core themes of identity and autonomy through fresh perspectives.
