Key information
CD Projekt Red has officially addressed the development of a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated that the company intends to craft a new story set within the established universe rather than producing a direct adaptation of the game's plot.
The project is currently being developed in collaboration with Paramount, which now operates under the Skydance banner. Production duties for the film have been assigned to Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the live-action Transformers franchise.
This creative direction mirrors the strategy used for the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. That project successfully expanded the franchise by introducing original characters and a fresh narrative while remaining grounded in the familiar dystopian setting and locations of the game world.
The Cyberpunk universe, originally conceived by tabletop RPG designer Mike Pondsmith, provides a broad foundation for exploring themes of autonomy and identity. While the film moves forward, fans can also look forward to the return of the Edgerunners series, which is scheduled to launch its next season on October 20.
