Renegade Games Studios has expanded the Heroscape universe with the Battle for Blackscar Battle Box. This two-player starter set introduces the Clockwork Combine and Umbral Covenant factions, who clash within the cavernous wilds of Blackscar to uncover secrets beneath Valhalla.
The box includes six unique heroes, interactive terrain, and ancient copper-colored tiles. Gameplay features destructible Young Shroudshrooms that block line of sight and Shadow Tiles that grant defensive bonuses. Characters are designed with synergistic abilities, such as bonding powers, which allow for strategic combat maneuvers.
GamingTrend’s reviewer praised the second and third scenarios as highly replayable and among the best in the series. While the first scenario was described as a straightforward fight, the later missions offered engaging, asymmetrical objectives. The reviewer noted that while some rules might require online clarification, the Clockwork Combine heroes, particularly “Blink” Dawson and Cainak, are standout pieces that perform well despite appearing disadvantaged on paper.
