Key information
Veteran designer Peter Molyneux recently addressed why a third entry in the Black & White series has remained elusive for two decades. During an interview, Molyneux suggested that while he is not personally involved, he believes there are individuals currently working on a remaster of the classic god game series.
Molyneux highlighted the immense technical difficulty inherent in the series, noting that the original games relied on pioneering, bespoke systems developed without modern middleware. A primary challenge involves the game's core mechanic of allowing players to zoom anywhere in the world at any time, which prevents traditional optimization techniques that rely on limiting the player's view.
Beyond technical hurdles, Molyneux pointed to the shifting priorities of major publishers. He noted that EA and Microsoft, which hold the respective rights to the third and fourth games, often favor larger, more commercially viable genres over the niche god game market, making it difficult to secure project approval.
While Molyneux cautioned that his information regarding a remaster should be taken with a pinch of salt, such a project could potentially revitalize interest in the franchise. For now, fans are directed toward Molyneux's current project, Masters of Albion, which recently received a significant update.
