Featherweight Games has officially released its action roguelike title, Chained Beasts, which supports cooperative play for one to four participants. The game is now available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch, with additional support provided through Xbox and Windows PC Game Pass.
The core gameplay revolves around players being physically tethered together by chains while battling through chaotic arenas. Participants must utilize these links and the surrounding environment to defeat enemies and entertain bloodthirsty crowds. The campaign spans three distinct chapters, beginning in Carthage, moving through the frozen wilderness of Germania, and concluding in the heart of the Roman Empire.
Co-director Tim Kaldor describes the title as a hard-core party game, blending the brutal nature of gladiatorial combat with the comedic chaos of linked movement. Development was heavily influenced by player feedback during testing phases, which led the team to simplify overly punishing status effects and confusing cooperative mechanics that were identified as frustrating during early iterations.
The project originated 12 years ago as a 48-hour game jam entry titled Enterchained, inspired by the film Gladiator. Although the team initially lacked the resources to complete the vision, they returned to the concept a decade later to finally realize their goal of integrating chain-based mechanics into a roguelike structure.
