Jeff Kaplan, the former lead designer of Overwatch, has opened up about his departure from Blizzard and his current professional life. Despite leading the title to a Game of the Year win in 2016, Kaplan has distanced himself from the franchise to avoid the pain of dwelling on his past identity. He no longer follows news or community discussions regarding the game, having last played it in April 2021 when the hero Echo was introduced.
Kaplan explicitly stated he does not want to be like the character Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite, who remains obsessed with his past achievements. He emphasizes that Overwatch now belongs to the current developers and players. While he holds fond memories of the project, particularly the 2014 BlizzCon reveal, he is focused on his new independent studio, Kintsugiyama, and its upcoming Wild West survival game, The Legend of California.
The transition has revealed shifts in his professional relationships. Kaplan noted with irony that some industry peers no longer respond to his emails, despite his previous role in generating one billion dollars for Blizzard. He views this as a test of genuine connections, noting that he is now operating without the artificial influence he once held as a high-profile director.
