Square Enix has officially announced the "SQUARE ENIX GAME CONTEST 2026," a competition featuring a total prize pool of 1 billion yen. Executive Officer Yosuke Saito stated that the initiative aims to discover and support new talent, drawing inspiration from the company's 1982 contest that helped launch the careers of industry figures like Yuji Horii and Koichi Nakamura.

The contest encourages developers to submit unique, one-concept games rather than traditional blockbusters. Saito emphasized that entries should be engaging to watch, as the first round of judging will be conducted via gameplay videos. The competition permits the use of AI as a development support tool, provided it adheres to established guidelines.

To ensure the selection process reflects current player preferences, Square Enix will include general game fans as judges alongside company staff. Finalists will receive direct feedback from the judging panel. Furthermore, the company intends to leverage its publishing and media resources to support winners, potentially including marketing, distribution, or even adaptations like comics or merchandise.

Applications for the contest open on December 15, 2026, with a submission deadline of March 15, 2027. Saito noted that the contest serves as a platform to help developers gain visibility for their work in an increasingly crowded market, encouraging creators of all ages to participate.
