Electronic Arts has reportedly decided to shut down BioWare, the studio recognized for developing the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. This significant organizational shift follows the company coming under the Private Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.
According to a report by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, the closure involves the termination of all BioWare staff. Approximately 400 employees are impacted by these layoffs, including about 50 core staff members based in Edmonton, Canada.
An internal memo from EA states that the decision was reached after a careful review of BioWare's business operations over recent months. The company aims to align its talent and investments toward areas offering the greatest growth potential for players.
As a result of the studio's closure, EA has officially canceled the next Mass Effect title. The project will not be transferred to any other internal studio, as the company shifts its focus toward sports titles and established properties like Apex Legends, Battlefield, and Star Wars Jedi.
