Key information

Jagex has officially cancelled the RuneScape Reignited project only 12 days after its initial announcement at RuneFest 2026 on October 3. The decision follows significant negative feedback from the community regarding the proposed direction for the long-running MMORPG.

The project aimed to offer a fresh start with a new character, an independent economy, and no pay-to-win progression advantages. However, players expressed concerns over the separation of traditional and new characters into distinct economies, which would have restricted trading and joint boss encounters despite sharing the same game world.

Creative Director Mod Ryan acknowledged the studio's error in a statement, noting that Jagex chose to halt the project to avoid repeating past mistakes, such as previous controversial combat system changes. The studio expressed gratitude for the community's feedback.

Despite the cancellation, the update scheduled for December 2 remains on track, featuring the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey. Additionally, a ten-day free trial will run from December 2 to December 12 for new characters and lapsed subscribers. The 2027 roadmap remains unaffected.
