Dean Hall, the creator of DayZ and Icarus, has publicly criticized major game engines Unreal and Unity, claiming the industry is rotting from within due to corporate greed and a lack of accountability. Following a disappointing interaction with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney at GDC 2025, Hall decided to develop his own open-source alternative called Brutal.

Hall argues that developers have surrendered too much control to companies whose interests often conflict with their own. He specifically condemned the industry's forced integration of generative AI, which he believes undermines the very creators these engines are supposed to serve. Brutal is designed as a framework, providing foundational structures rather than a pre-built environment.

Brutal distinguishes itself by being 100% free for commercial use with only attribution required. It operates without royalties or commissions and explicitly excludes all generative AI tools. As an open-source project, it aims to restore developer independence by ensuring creators retain full control over their source code and systems.

The engine is currently being utilized for the development of Kitten Space Agency and by Ludeon Studios for internal tools. While Hall acknowledges that Brutal will not immediately replace industry giants, he views it as a necessary step to provide developers with a viable path toward autonomy should they choose to move away from traditional engines.
