Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains in active development 18 years after its initial announcement. Despite the lengthy duration, the project has not been canceled, as the publisher continues to provide significant support for the title.
The game's design philosophy has undergone a major transition. Previously, plans from 2021-2022 envisioned a multiplayer-focused experience intended to function as a social hub similar to Fortnite or Destiny. Current development goals have shifted to prioritize a single-player experience that does not require a constant online connection, though cooperative play will still be supported.
Reports indicate that the project's aesthetic and mechanical direction has evolved over time. While early concepts were compared to a space-themed The Legend of Zelda, the current iteration is described as resembling Insomniac Games' Spider-Man.
Despite the long timeline, the game is currently in the pre-production stage and is transitioning into an alpha phase. Future progress remains uncertain as Ubisoft undergoes internal restructuring and workforce layoffs, leaving the final release of the title to be determined.
