Electronic Arts has announced a significant organizational restructuring, resulting in the closure of the 31-year-old studio BioWare. According to reports, this initiative involves laying off approximately 400 employees, representing 3% of the company's global workforce, with about 50 of those positions coming from the BioWare team.
The closure marks the end of BioWare's long-standing legacy, which began in 1995 and included iconic titles like Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect. EA stated that the decision was difficult, noting that recent projects such as Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet performance expectations.
As part of this shift, EA has officially terminated the development of the new Mass Effect project that was previously in early stages. Executives Cam Weber and David Tinson explained that the company is narrowing its focus to high-growth potential services and reducing the number of concurrent large-scale development projects to better navigate increasing industry competition.
Beyond the closure of BioWare, EA is adjusting its broader portfolio. The company will prioritize the Project Evergreen initiative for The Sims while pausing Project Lotus and reducing the team size for the free-to-play skate. title. Conversely, investment will continue for franchises like Battlefield, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi, with new projects in development at Respawn Entertainment and DICE.
