Microsoft officially announced improvements to Windows 11 memory management on October 15, detailing performance enhancements included in OS build 26300.9550. These optimizations, which were part of the 26H2 update released via KB5124010 on September 29, aim to improve system responsiveness by managing resources more efficiently.

The update allows active data to be held in memory rather than offloaded to slower storage, increasing capacity by up to 2GB. Additionally, for PCs with 8GB of RAM or less, widgets are now only loaded upon opening, saving over 200MB of memory. Microsoft notes that these changes are particularly beneficial for systems with 8GB of RAM.

Following the update, Windows Latest reported positive results on a 16GB PC, observing a 2GB reduction in memory usage compared to three years ago. During multitasking tests involving 4K YouTube playback, memory usage reached 87%, whereas the outlet estimated it would have hit 95% previously. The publication attributes these gains to the 26H2 update.

These improvements follow a series of performance-focused announcements from Microsoft throughout the year, including updates in March, May, and July regarding WinUI 3 efficiency and widget optimization. The 26H2 release represents the culmination of these efforts to enhance overall system resource utilization.
