Professional fighting game player Dominique McLean, known as SonicFox, terminated their contract with the American convention Nexcon 2026 on October 21. The decision followed the discovery that organizers used generative AI to create promotional posters featuring an unauthorized depiction of SonicFox's signature fursona.
The event, organized by Ninjutsu Entertainment, is scheduled for November 14 and 15 in Norman, Oklahoma. SonicFox initially discovered the AI-generated imagery on October 20 after fans shared the promotional materials, which also depicted other guests using AI tools.
Ninjutsu Entertainment co-founder Ty Bailey admitted to using AI due to budget constraints and a lack of event planning experience, noting that he and his partner manage the convention alongside full-time jobs. Bailey issued a public apology and requested that SonicFox reconsider their attendance.
SonicFox accepted the apology but maintained their refusal to attend, stating that actions must have consequences. They suggested that the organizers redirect the funds originally allocated for their appearance fee toward hiring human artists, noting that they might reconsider participating in the event next year.
