Microsoft has established Xbox Labs to explore web-based and cross-platform gaming development. As an initial demonstration, the team has successfully recreated three distinct user interface themes from the Xbox 360 era for web browsers.

Xbox Labs head Scott Van Vliet showcased the project on X, featuring the Blade UI, the NXE UI, and the Metro UI. These interfaces offer full interactivity, including the original console startup animations and the ability to switch between styles. Users can even sync their Xbox account achievements and scores directly within the browser.

Technical limitations are present, as the original Xbox Live services for the console are offline. Consequently, many menu icons appear blank, and the Avatar feature is currently broken, displaying only a black silhouette. Some media outlets speculate that the project might utilize an emulator to map an actual console system, noting the URL contains a string similar to an Xbox 360 serial number.

This experiment may signal a future direction for Xbox Game Pass. By leveraging improved Web GPU support, Microsoft could potentially move away from heavy downloads or server-side cloud streaming, aiming for a more lightweight and cost-efficient gaming experience.
