On October 15, 2026, the Godot Engine team released the first beta version of Godot 4.8. Following the feature freeze announced on September 29, 2026, with the release of dev 7, this beta phase shifts development focus toward fixing regression bugs and conducting code reviews rather than introducing new features.

Key technical improvements include a new texture streaming system that loads only necessary Mip levels, aimed at reducing VRAM usage in large 3D environments. The editor interface has been updated to support docking, floating, and detaching main windows. Additionally, Android development is streamlined through new automated SDK management directly within the editor.

While the team aims to minimize breaking changes, some are necessary to address high-priority issues. Developers are encouraged to review the list of breaking changes provided in the official blog or via the 'breaks compat' label on GitHub to assess potential impacts on existing projects before updating.

The beta is available for download, including Web, XR, and Android editor versions. As this is a pre-release build, the team advises users to maintain regular backups and version control to prevent data loss. No official release date for the stable version has been announced.
